Once you come to the conclusion that braces are going to be your best bet for finally getting the nice, straight teeth you have been longing for, there are some things you need to prepare yourself for. If you aren't prepared for what it's going to be like with braces, then you will have a harder time adjusting to them. Here is what you can expect life to be like once you decide to go through with having braces put on:

They aren't cheap – Getting braces is not a cheap process, but there are things that you can do to make the cost a bit easier on you. You can consider getting a medical/dental credit card that will allow you to pay off the cost of your braces over time. You can also talk to the dentist about the possibilities of a payment plan. Try looking into dental insurance plans, or see if you can add a dental package onto your current health insurance.

Prepare for the braces being put on and adjusted – You want to be prepared for the pain of having the braces put on. They will pull on your teeth in order to cause a shift in them. Plus, when you first have them put on, it will hurt because you won't be used to this kind of pressure. Your mouth will also be at risk of being cut by the metal edges of the braces, but there is a wax you can put over the sharp edges to help with this part. Each time you go in for a re-tightening, you can expect more discomfort. The best thing you can do is to keep the end result in mind, which will be an amazing smile!

Live each day a "brace friendly" way – Every day you want to be sure you take proper care of your braces and your teeth, so you see the best results possible once they finally do come off. Get used to not eating sticky or hard foods, like gum, taffy, hard nuts, and ice cubes. Also, use the wax until you have finally developed a mouth that is no longer bothered by the edges of the braces. Get in the habit of brushing your teeth after every meal. This is important because the braces make it so all kinds of food particles have many areas to hide, which leads to bacteria and plaque build-up.

About Me
Got Tooth Decay? Finding Dental Care Tips Right For You

When it comes to my dental care, I only use the best toothbrushes, toothpastes and flosses. But sometimes, even after being vigilant and careful with my oral care, I experience problems like toothaches. Last year, I developed a small cavity in one of my back teeth. I didn't want to bother my dentist about it, so I simply took pain medications and hoped for the best. But after my jaw began to swell up, I sought professional dental help. My small cavity was actually a large hole filled with infection. I ended up having an extraction. Now, I visit my dentist as often as I can, because I can't afford to lose anymore teeth. I want to share my experiences with other people, so I created this blog. I offer tips on how to keep your teeth healthy and when to see a dentist. Thanks for visiting.
