Getting braces is usually a big step, especially when you want to improve your dental health, as well as the shape of your teeth. However, there are certain things you need to do before visiting your orthodontist to get your braces on. Before the treatment, you need to do the following things:

Treat Yourself

There are certain treats you should enjoy a few days before your braces are fitted since you will be required to avoid them once the braces are put on. Some of these treats include the following:

  • Hard lollies and nuts – These are majorly responsible for breaking the wires in braces. Therefore, it is always important to enjoy them before the braces are fitted.

  • Chewy foods – Foods like toffees can harm the brackets on the braces.

  • Popcorn – You should enjoy popcorn before getting your braces fixed since popcorn can easily stick in your braces.

  • Bread rolls and pizza with hard crust

  • Vegetables and crunchy fruits, like carrots and whole apples

Clean Your Teeth Well

For the cement to adhere well to your teeth, the orthodontist needs to do this on a surface that is plaque-free. So, if you don't want professional cleaning before the braces are applied, ensure that you clean your teeth thoroughly after your last meal before visiting the orthodontist.

Pay One Last Visit to Your Dentist

It's a good idea to get a dental exam to ensure your teeth are ready for braces. Correct cavities to make your teeth a strong base for braces. Your dentist will also look for any other problems that would make it harder for braces to succeed, such as cracked teeth or teeth that need a root canal.

Take a Before Photo

People who are self-conscious about their teeth usually smile with their mouths closed. However, before you go in to get your braces, ensure that you take a photo of your teeth while smiling wide. Doing that will allow you to feel good when looking at how your teeth were before the orthodontic treatment and how much the treatment has changed your smile.

Inspect Your Teeth Using Your Tongue

When you get the braces, you will be tempted to poke the braces using your tongue. However, you should avoid doing that at all costs. Once you clean your teeth, take some time to feel their smoothness using your tongue, as you won't be able to do this again until the braces are removed.

Buy Soft Foods

You will experience some degree of discomfort for a few days after getting your braces. Therefore, ensure that you buy cold and soft foods to eat during that period. You can choose to eat things like oatmeal, quinoa, soups, and smoothies, as they can be more comfortable during this period. Additionally, you can blend some veggies and fruits to ensure that you won't miss important nutrients.

About Me
Got Tooth Decay? Finding Dental Care Tips Right For You

When it comes to my dental care, I only use the best toothbrushes, toothpastes and flosses. But sometimes, even after being vigilant and careful with my oral care, I experience problems like toothaches. Last year, I developed a small cavity in one of my back teeth. I didn't want to bother my dentist about it, so I simply took pain medications and hoped for the best. But after my jaw began to swell up, I sought professional dental help. My small cavity was actually a large hole filled with infection. I ended up having an extraction. Now, I visit my dentist as often as I can, because I can't afford to lose anymore teeth. I want to share my experiences with other people, so I created this blog. I offer tips on how to keep your teeth healthy and when to see a dentist. Thanks for visiting.
